PIANO CONCERTO NUMBER ONE

PIANO CONCERTO NUMBER ONE

softly

carefully

a single finger

caresses

the white

then the black

then lifts

then retracts

softly

softly

then two

then three

reach now for the keys

they kiss the ivory

a pause stills the air

then two hands stretch to command

they plunge and music explodes

my soul implodes at each strengthening touch

lifted from its mortal bindings,

it struggles to be free

to take wing

to soar in open air

to float in a dream.

in a kaleidoscope of color

of sound

of wonder

at each touch

at each slight brush

flesh

against the keys

and turns my world

into a place of pain

exquisite

into a place of wonder

flawless

dancing softly

fingers slip across the keys

then loud

hard

demanding and allowing

a place of pain

a place of wonder

a note suddenly hangs

suspended from an unseen thread

then plunges

a string of notes

runs long and catches my breath away

then ends so softly

so softly

the illusion melts away

so softly

softly

  1. I heard the music from the piano as I read your poem.

    1. Thank you. I heard the music as I wrote it and I was trying very hard to put what I heard into words. So, thanks for letting me know. 🙂
