THE VETERANS’ ADMINISTRATION DISASTER

I accompanied the widow of a friend of mine to the Regional Office of the VA located at Bay Pines, Florida. She had been a widow for just one week. We had the long form death certificate and she had already filed for the DIC claim through the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs. All was in order. All that is except the VA.

Chuck had been disabled permanently and totally by the VA for over 10 years. Brandy and he had been married for many years past the ten year requirement to obtain compensation from the VA upon the death of the veteran.

In this case, Brandy is to receive DIC payments for life following the death of her veteran husband. Brandy has spent years taking care of her husband. She has no income other than what her husband brought in from his VA pension and some Social Security. None meaning …. none. She expected and expects to receive a benefit package from the VA which is about 1/2 of the money paid to Chuck monthly as disability income from his service and injuries while serving in Vietnam.

Well, guess what? She was told that she would have to wait up to maybe a year-and-a-half before she would get a check from the government. WHAT????? She will have NO income from the VA for one to one-and-a-half-years.

That is what we were told at the VA Regional Office.

She sat there crying telling the man she had NO income. NO INCOME means NO INCOME. Oh, the guy said, but in a year-and-a-half you will get a check for the full amount covering that time. EXCUSE ME….. Between now and then what is she supposed to do to pay her bills and provide herself with food. SHE HAS NO INCOME. Well, in case they turn off her utilities or she becomes homeless there is another form she can fill out and file for hardship…..WHAT????….. She has to file another form and then wait for that form to be processed which could take how long? A few months.

Excuse me but this pisses me off. The widow of a 100% totally disabled veteran with no income has to wait up to possibly one-and-a-half-years before getting any compensation which by law she is qualified to receive.

WHY? Because the VA is so backed up with claims that she will have to wait for her Dependent Income and if she starves to death well, that is just too bad. If she has to live in a house with no electricity well that is okay. If she loses her home well that is just the way it is.

I say bull shit. This is governmental bull shit.

  1. The laws should be re-worked so that those solely dependent on income could be serviced faster and without losing their way of life. After all a lot of veterans set up so their families won’t have to worry later. I’m sure there is a supplementary program out there if we can find it, I’ll have to look into it.

    1. The problem is that of indifference. This should have been a slam dunk. They are aware of Brandy, just as they are aware of every other spouse because the disabled veteran who is at 100% total and permanent has on record who that person is. They are being paid a bit higher than standard 100% because of the spouse. So, it is no secret that she is and has been there on the records for over ten years.

      1. This is appalling not aware of the whole scope as I noted previously my grandmother was in that same exact position didn’t take a year and a half but it did take about 3-5 months to start receiving the benefits. I definitely understand that anger and frustration

  2. I am sorry that it happened to your Grandmother. It shouldn’t happen to anyone. The snippy little commentators should also be held accountable for their actions. I can only wish that whatever they do to the widows and widowers happens to them 10 fold.

  3. From a widows point of view here in nz i went thru a similiar thing.left with 3 young children 2 have mental health issues..hubbie had worked all his life paid his taxes got sick with clinical depression had to apply for a sickness benefit. The system failed him badly he waited and waited for his papers to be cleared during that waiting time his illness over came him and he sadly took his on life. And my children and i lost the most loving and kindest hardworking man on the planet. So yes the system even cost peoples lives. The system finally paid out what they owed my hubbie the day after his funeral but that doesnt bring him back.Nor the apologies they made.So my prayers are with your friend. But i too battled the system and got what i needed to pay the bills and keep a roof over our heads plus deal with the grief you go thru and become a mum and dad But we .made it my bear crew are all grown up now well adjusted and educated. And they have learnt how not to ever trust the system.god bless and lets hope someone will step forward to fasten up what she is owed right now.

    1. Very sad, and very frustrating. We are all cut from the same cloth. I do not understand why it is that humans can so quickly dismiss the needs of others, particularly those they are supposed to serve. I have run into people who were working to fire staff as they approached retirement to avoid having the company having to pay retirement benefits. I wondered what they would think when it came their time to face the same issues and someone was out to fire them. For God’s sake, or humanities sake, why are people so inhuman to other people, so dismissing, so not caring. I don’t understand. And that is not to say I have not made mistakes myself when dealing with others. I am guilty of stupidity in several cases when I owned my own business, but I never acted out of cruelty or the desire to harm someone. What I am talking about is just that, acting to harm and when you have situations that beg for understanding (not firing for cause) then caution should be the guiding word, caution and a need to understand the person’s plight and/or needs. We need to take care of one another.

I have been watching more Netflicks than anything becuase they have series they put together. I am finishing The Borgia about Pope Alexander the Sixth of That Name and his family. Political intrique in the church.
